The heart chakra is located in the heart plexus in the center of the chest, not above the heart. It is the axis of the chakra system. Just as the abdomen is at the center of gravity of the physical body, the heart is at the center of the luminous body. The thymus is regulated by the heart chakra. The thymus is responsible for cell-mediated immunity. It is one of the main players in the immune response and is crucial for the development of the body’s “killer cells” – B and T lymphocytes. People with low immune systems respond well when the heart chakra is cleared through the “Light Enlightenment Process.”
The Sanskrit name for the heart chakra is anahata, which means “unbound.” It refers to how we free ourselves from material measures of success. Money, cars, fame and fortune are no longer the measure of achievement. Freedom, joy and eternal peace become the hallmarks of a person who dwells in the center of the heart chakra. Temporally, the heart chakra is associated with ages 21 to 28. It is the center where we build families and discover love with our soul mates and children.
We share and experience love through our heart center. This is the most misunderstood chakra in the human body because the love of the heart chakra is neither the affection we exchange with each other nor the romantic love we “fall in.” The heart chakra thrives on love for creation, a love like the love of a flower for the rain, or the love of a jaguar for an antelope. This kind of love is neither object-centered nor dependent on others for its existence. It’s not sentimental. It is impersonal. Christian theologians call it agape. The Incas called it munay. This kind of love is not a means to an end. It does not lead to marriage or a relationship. It is an end in itself.
A few years ago, while traveling through the Andes, my companions and I were caught in a snowstorm. We were accompanying an Indian woman and her three-month-old baby to a clinic in the valley. We took shelter in an abandoned hut, which protected us from the wind, snow and hail, but the wind still roared mercilessly through the gaps in the stone walls. We huddled together, Maria holding the baby tightly. All night the mother tried to feed her baby, opening her blouse and bringing the baby’s lips to her breast. By morning the storm abated and the hills were covered with a blanket of white. At the break of dawn we all went outside to warm ourselves in the sun. When Maria takes the baby out, we discover that the girl has died during the night. We returned to the village where a medicine man blessed the baby and performed a death ceremony. I then accompanied the young mother to the mountains and dug a shallow grave in the frozen earth to try to comfort her. Both of us were in tears and we prayed to Pachamama, the Mother Earth, that she would accept her child. After digging we covered the mound with a pile of rocks and returned to the village.
Two days later, Maria was back working in the family fields. They were turning the soil in preparation for planting. I am still distraught and have been grieving the death of my child for the past few days. Seeing how sad I was, Maria came over and hugged me and said, “Don’t be sad. My child has returned to her mother now.” Her words touched my pain. I walked to the glacier stream at the edge of the village, took off my shorts, and waded into the shallow water. The cold river water woke me up from my narcissistic sentimentality. Maria then took me to the witch doctor who performed the death rituals for her children. The old woman pressed my heart with her hand and told me with a kind face that there was nothing to be sad about. I couldn’t believe it. She was comforting me. That night, her family thanked me for spending time with Maria through that long, mind-numbing cold night. Although they are clearly sad, they are filled with warmth and compassion. I have never experienced such selfless love. Egoism, no matter how altruistic it may seem, can create a serious imbalance in the fourth chakra.
To experience selfless love, we must give up on our past selves. Therefore, shamans have devised sophisticated methods to experience the death of the ego and egoism.
However, we don’t need to go through the complex death rituals of a bush shaman to experience heart chakra love. Just surrender to love and realize the feeling of love as a practice and meditation. We must stop falling into love and become completely love itself; when you feel your heartbeat, remind yourself that it is love beating.
One of the negative manifestations of this chakra is obsession with self. We all know people who claim to know that “love is the answer” and talk all the clichés about love. These people are more interested in demonstrating their “savvy” than practicing charity or selfless love. Another negative manifestation of our loving instinct is the inability to express compassion for ourselves. When self-love is lacking, we spiral into self-criticism and shame. A damaged heart chakra can prevent us from engaging in intimate relationships. This type of person will run away when they feel vulnerable, often using work or other things to distract themselves from their loved ones. A balanced heart chakra allows us to engage in intimate love. It integrates the masculine and feminine principles within us and we no longer look outside ourselves for the “missing half.” Softness and hardness, receptivity and creativity are no longer opposites, these principles merge in subtle harmony. The Heart Center restores our innocence and fills us with joy and inspiration. We know who we are and we accept ourselves, which brings us joy and peace.
