The crown chakra at the top of our head is our portal to heaven, just as the first chakra is the portal to earth. The light that emanates from this center reaches out to the stars and our destiny. The earth protects us and nourishes us with her vitality, and God promotes our growth. Seeds will only germinate in rich, dark, moist soil, yet they grow in the sunlight. After germination, all plants turn to sunlight. Similarly, our spiritual life sprouts in the first chakra connected to the earth, and then the light of heaven enters through the crown chakra to nourish the entire chakra system. The name of this chakra in Sanskrit is sahasrara, meaning “empty”, and those who receive the gift from this center no longer need physical form. Ability to travel through time and space and become one with heaven and earth.
The lesson of the seventh chakra is to master time. When we break free of linear causal time, we are no longer under the tyrannical control of the past. Today is no longer the result of earlier events, we experience freedom from cause and effect. We live with one foot in the ordinary world and one foot in the spiritual world, and we realize they have something in common. In the sixth chakra, the healer gains knowledge of past and future events, and when she awakens her gifts in the seventh chakra, she is able to influence these events. She can help heal past events and help her clients choose an alternative future, perhaps one in which a person is disease-free or lives a more fulfilling life.
In the seventh chakra, the shaman is free from desires, hopes, or regrets. In the upper reaches of the Madre de Dios River near the border of Peru and Brazil, there lived an old witch doctor who specialized in ayahuasca, a jungle elixir that, when properly channeled, can allow people to experience the realm beyond death. The old man rarely spoke anymore, he had no need for words. During the ceremony, he whistles and sings songs about the river and herbs, allowing you to experience yourself as one with the surrounding rainforest, and you and the river are no longer separated; the crickets, cicadas and you are all notes blown by the same flute.
In the seventh chakra we learn that life is an intricate web of luminous threads, that each of us is one of these threads and that we are also the entire web. I still remember the first time I worked with this shaman. The last time I took ayahuasca was five years ago. Ayahuasca, I have tried this botanical medicine many times so I know how powerful it is. I thought so. About an hour after taking the plant, I had a vision of my own death. I see my body before me, lifeless, and I observe it from a distance. I know my identity is intact. I am the observer, not the corpse. Then the nausea hit me and I ran outside into the jungle and fell ill. Everything around me pulsed with life: giant creepers, dangling vines, giant trees that provided a canopy for all the arboreal creatures. Everything was alive except for me. I became a living corpse, no longer an observer. I feel the pain of life and the pain of losing loved ones. I was devastated. Then I became a spectator again and felt free. Over the long years that followed, I bounced back and forth between the two perspectives of pain and peace, bondage and freedom, life and death, until I understood that they were one. In the seventh chakra, there is no longer distinction between subject and object. Everything is participatory. Seeming contradictions become one: life in death, peace in pain, freedom in bondage.
Negative manifestations of the seventh chakra are spiritual regression disguised as enlightenment. Although to experience transcendence one must transcend the self, we often think of every non-self state as transcendence. The idea that being free of the ego means having a spirit is far from the truth. Many non-ego states exist at different levels. For example, an infant’s sense of self is indistinguishable from its surroundings. In psychotherapy, a lack of self-boundaries is considered unhealthy. In people with severe mental illness, such as schizophrenia, the self is fragmented to the point of dysfunction. In traditional cultures, the “initiation” process is carefully designed to ensure that students have established a solid sense of self before attempting to dismember themselves and reach this level.
In our quick-and-easy culture, spiritual seekers often want to work beyond the lower chakras. Some seekers are attracted by the promise of bizarre experiences. Still others are just impatient or don’t fully realize that they also need to clear their lower chakras in preparation for this work. Sometimes, even their teachers fail to complete this process, and they themselves may not realize the need for it. These people believe that whatever level of development they have reached is already enlightenment, and they openly refuse to accept that there are higher levels of development. This kind of mental misunderstanding is very common today.
Those who master the seventh chakra gain extraordinary powers, including remembering ancient memories that belong to humanity’s collective consciousness. Doña Laura once told me that the ultimate test for a shaman in reaching this state is to remember the first story.
She said: “When time was very young, before four-legged animals or plants existed, stone men told us our first stories. That’s why we put a circle of stones around our campfires.”
I begged her to tell me more.
She would say “Ask the Stone”. Until one day, I finally remembered.
Another gift of the seventh chakra is the ability to shapeshift. These wizards understand that they are no different from stone, plants, or the earth. One time, Laura transformed into a beautiful young Indian woman during one of our meetings. I was completely attracted to her and mesmerized by her eyes and smile. At one point in the night, she walked behind a boulder, and in a flash the person who came back was Doña Laura, one of the most ordinary people I have ever met.
“Don’t you think I’m beautiful?” she asked with a smile.
Those who have mastered the gift of this chakra understand that the river of life flows beyond the visible and invisible, beyond existence and non-existence. They know infinity, unaffected by time or form.
