Goddess Hecate
- Hectate * is the ancient goddess of witchcraft and the goddess of the black moon. On this night when the moon cannot be seen, walk to a three-way intersection and hold a torch. You may see a three-headed goddess wearing a white robe and gold-strap shoes. This goddess is * Hectate *, the moon goddess of the night. According to legend, she is one of the three incarnations of the moon goddess. Some people believe that she, * Artemis * and * Selene * are symbols of three different forms of the moon, and also represent the power of the moon in the sky, on the earth, and underground.
The power and antiquity of Hekate is truly astonishing. According to legend, this goddess came from Asia Minor and was higher than Zeus. Some legends believe that she came from the night, and some said that she came from chaos. Regardless of her true origin, there is no doubt that she is a noble goddess. Her name is mentioned in many epics and historical legends, and she is called the “Goddess of Witchcraft”, “Lord of Magic”, and “God of Witches”.
She was also considered an earth goddess, presiding over the activities of all living things below the surface and the realm where the human world meets the underworld. It is said that she has the ability to hide in the darkness, and therefore assists * Demeter * in retrieving her daughter * Persephone , becoming a dark goddess who can walk in darkness and Hades without hindrance. With her powerful magic, she even defeated the Titan Klytios with a torch Klytios *, making Zeus fear her.
Such a powerful goddess was regarded as having the same status as all moon goddesses in ancient times. She was also the ancestor of witches. Some sects that worshiped the moon god were required to worship Hecate before joining the sect because she was the goddess of darkness and magic. She was also regarded as the snake goddess, which shows her status in the hearts of ancient wizards. Therefore, we believe that the goddess * Hectate *, in addition to teaching us magic, also allows us to understand the true meaning of darkness and live in harmony with her, helping us face our own dark side and become a more powerful self.

Hecate Crossroads Meditation
Find a comfortable sitting position, close your eyes and take three deep breaths, and meditate on the following images:
You find yourself on a lonely country road. In your hands is a heavy backpack. It was dark and the night sky was full of stars. This is the night of the black moon. You sighed, put on your backpack, and started walking on the road. The pack is heavy tonight and you have a long, long way to go.
As you walk you become aware of the sounds of the night. You could hear a hoarse squeak coming from the ditch next to the road. Soon you’ll hear more croaks and squeaks as the frogs fill the night with their chorus.
Suddenly, the frogs stop singing and silence falls over you as you walk wearily down the road. The backpack feels heavier on my back than when I first put it on. The night was lonely and cold, and the road ahead was almost invisible. If it weren’t for the starry night, you’d be completely plunged into darkness.
You feel the breeze above you and look up to see a giant barn owl swooping past you, hunting a rabbit or mouse that strays too close to the road.
As you move forward, the trees growing on either side of the road seem to extend into each other, causing the road to become narrower and darker. As you walk, branches can get tangled in your backpack, clothing, and hair. You slap the branches angrily and discover that the tree is a willow. The backpack seemed to get heavier with every step. The road gets narrower and the trees get closer.
In the distance, a dog began to howl.
As you continue your trek down the road, you hear the dog again, this time seemingly closer. The straps of your backpack dig into your shoulders, and your legs are getting tired. You have a long way to go before you rest. You have to keep walking, you have to carry your bag until the end. You shrugged, lowered your head and continued on your way.
The dog howls again and this time you know it’s nearby. The hair on the back of your neck stood up in fear. You looked up and saw that you had come to a crossroads.
There stood an old woman with a coffin in front of her.
The woman chants runes on the coffin lid. She doesn’t look up from her work, but you realize she knows you’re there. Her hair is black with gray streaks. Her face showed the wrinkles of a worldly person. She wore a black gown with her hood pulled up. Beside her are three big black dogs, watching you silently.
The woman continues to chant, but you cannot understand what she is saying. Curiosity brings you closer to her, but she doesn’t look up. You become aware of the smell of yew and cypress in the air. You get closer and closer until you’re right next to the coffin. You set your backpack down on the ground and stared at the coffin and the runes the woman had drawn on it.
You looked up at the old woman. She stops her work and looks you in the eyes. The wisdom and knowledge of the ages are reflected in her eyes. You wanted to look away, but you were caught by her gaze. You feel as though she is judging you and your worth. You feel as if she can see into your soul.
Satisfied with her discovery, she nodded and began to draw another rune.
She started chanting again, then stopped.
“Do you know what this is?” she asks you, her voice strong but soft, as if she is talking to a child. “My name is Hekate, and this is the Burning Coffin.”
She asks you to think about it for a moment and then move on.
“You carry something you no longer need, a burden that keeps you from experiencing life to the fullest. I give you a chance to let it go, give it up if you can, and let it die. You can put it in a coffin, close the lid and burn it. You can release your burden this way. A burning coffin is a very useful tool.” She told you with a smile in her voice.
She continued to draw runes on the coffin lid.
“Do you have weight? Things that are no longer useful? Things that you can’t let go of? Anger? Fear? Regret? Jealousy? Sadness? Grief? You’ve been carrying it for a long time. It’s with you now, in that heavy bag next to you. Do you have anything to give to the coffin burner?”
You pick up your backpack. It feels heavier than before. You open it and peek inside. You’ll find three heavy boulders in the bag. Each boulder has a word carved on it. Anger…fear…regret
Hekate opened the lid of the burning coffin and stepped back.
You pick up the boulder labeled “Wrath” and look at it. What anger are you holding on to, ready to let go and throw yourself into a burning coffin? When you’re ready, place the boulder into the coffin.
Reach into your backpack and pick up the boulder labeled “Fear.” What fears are holding you back from becoming the person you want to be? When ready, place the boulder into the burning coffin. It landed next to the first boulder.
Pick up the last boulder in your backpack, labeled “Regret”. What regrets can you let go of tonight so you can enjoy life now? When ready, place the boulder into the burning coffin.
Each stone makes a satisfying “thud” sound as you place it into the coffin.
The moment the last boulder fell into the coffin, layers of mist began to form inside the coffin. They begin to spin, and as they spin, they begin to glow yellow. The mist swirled around the boulder faster and faster, turning first orange, then red. Hekate stepped forward and stretched his arms towards the coffin, which suddenly burst into flames. You stepped back, expecting the heat to scorch your clothes, and Hekate smiled… “The fire of transformation will not harm you” she explained.
You watch, fascinated as the coffin and rock disintegrate, collapsing into a pile of gray ash.
Then it was quiet. Hekate took out a knife and gently poked something out of the ashes. She pushes it towards you and you pick it up. Look closely at Hekate’s gift to you. As you learn it, you’ll realize that this is exactly what you need to move forward. You pick up your bag and put the gift in it. Your bag is much lighter now!
Thank Hekate for his gift and give him a gift in return. If you want, you can stay a while and talk to her.
Hekate stepped aside and pointed the way. You put on your backpack and continue your journey. Behind you, the frog starts singing again. Ahead, you will see the dawn. Your backpack is light and your heart is filled with joy.
When you feel you’re about the same, take three deep breaths and return to the present moment.
joya’s note: The words on the three stones can be adjusted according to your own situation.
