SKY CHAKRAS Sky Chakra

At the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth chakras, development becomes transpersonal. The areas we explore are becoming more and more subtle. This is where we get into trouble. New Age Ascension Spirituality advances an otherworldly conception of God and ignores the practical spirituality of the Feminine Earth. The sky chakra is supported by the earth chakra, just as the branches are supported by the roots. The gifts of the upper chakras are very practical and can be practiced in this world, not in the world; this truth has been recognized by every great spiritual teacher. When Christ taught that “the kingdom of heaven is at your side,” he was implying that heaven and earth are one and indivisible.
We are familiar with ley line issues from psychotherapy and personal growth. We all have to deal with mommy and daddy issues, anger, shame, fear, sex, lust and the desire for safety. The Sky Chakra is an area that we are less familiar with. These chakras possess properties that are sometimes difficult to grasp. In some cases, the difference between two chakra properties is a matter of degree. Think of the love a child feels for his mother and the love he later feels for his lover. Although they both belong to the category of love, they are completely different experiences. The same goes for the spiritual lessons and attributes of the upper chakras.
When my mentor and I mapped the realms of the sky chakras, we identified the attributes that corresponded to these centers. Transcendence of death is an attribute of the sixth chakra; mastery of time is an attribute of the seventh chakra; invisibility is an attribute of the eighth chakra; and the ability to keep secrets is an attribute of the ninth chakra.

The sixth chakra, or third eye chakra, is located in the middle of the forehead. In Indian tradition, it is considered to be the third eye of Shiva, imparting the knowledge of perfect truth and non-duality. The Sanskrit name for this center is ajna, or “infinite power.” In this chakra we gain the knowledge that we are inseparable from God. We express the sacred within ourselves and we see the sacred in others. When we are in the presence of someone who has achieved this level of enlightenment, we feel a deep sense of peace and tranquility. You realize that you are an eternal being inhabiting a temporary body. A person who has awakened the sixth chakra realizes that the true self must be free of its unique identification with physical or spiritual experiences. We transcend body and mind but welcome both into our realm of consciousness. When we begin to observe the mind, we can enter a transpersonal state. We follow the mind with curiosity but without being attracted by it. When you transcend the mind, doubt disappears and desire and desire are no longer the driving force. One enters a realm of knowledge that can be experienced but cannot be told. This is not to say that these areas do not belong to language, but that experience is everything. The shaman said that this is a realm that cannot be found by searching, but only those who seek can find it. It’s like two lovers who are no longer separated, united by a kiss. If there are no experiencers, how can we have experience? Once the matter was told, it fell apart. It’s like waking up from a dream. When you realize it was just a dream, the dream is no longer remembered.
When the sixth chakra is malfunctioning, individuals confuse information with knowledge. He felt he had arrived at a great spiritual truth when all he had was a set of facts. The shaman knew how to bring about rainfall without being able to explain that water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Spiritual materialism is an endemic dysfunction of the third eye chakra. These people often wield enormous power and influence in the world without taking on stewardship responsibilities. In our media-driven, celebrity-worshiping world, the energy of the sixth chakra can become distorted, leading to spiritual arrogance and self-aggrandizement.
As an anthropologist, I learned that every contact you have with an indigenous group corrodes the culture you study. The food you carry with you, your camera and tools, and even your western wear are all destructive. The Incas I studied with, including Doña Laura and Don Manuel, still spun wool and handmade their own clothing. They don’t have any Western equipment. However, after witnessing the death of Maria’s child, I abandoned the anthropological maxim of non-intervention. I started collecting children’s clothing among my students to take to the Inca highlands. Thanks to the many generous donations we receive, we provide jackets and winter clothing for every child in six Highland villages. In 1992, we started sending medical teams to help villagers. Although they had little contact with the West, they were already stricken by the diseases of civilization. We provide medical assistance to more than 300 adults and children each year in a tent that serves as a field clinic high in the mountains. One year, someone who had read about our work went on a photography expedition to these remote villages and left behind several boxes of infant formula, which several women then began feeding their babies on a priority basis. A few months later, a mother came to our tent clinic and showed us her four-month-old baby. She ran out of baby formula three weeks ago and her breast milk dried up. The baby was scrawny. He weighed less than eight pounds. We left all of our baby food with her and encouraged her to have one of her neighbors nurse her baby until the baby could start eating solids. These well-meaning travelers leave behind dangerous gifts.
I realized that we must discover our inner shaman. I tell my students that no amount of traveling with Indians will make you gain your own wisdom and strength. I find that it often backfires and distracts us from a true encounter with our soul. A shaman is a self-actualized person. She discovered the spiritual path through inner awakening. Antonio reminded me that Buddha was not a Buddhist and Christ was not a Christian. One sat under the banyan tree until he became enlightened. Another went to the desert for 40 days. In the sixth chakra we experience our own awakening. We remove our ponchos, robes, sand bells and feathers, and all other external markings.
The awakened third eye lets the shaman know who he is. It gives him knowledge of the past and future and allows him to envision alternative destinies. Some legends mention that those who awaken this chakra can even achieve physical immortality. Instead of aging or succumbing to disease, they are able to retain their youthful vitality and strength. All wishes of a person with awakened third eye chakra will come true and if many healers hold the same vision then this planet will come true. Native religions have long practiced this tradition. Hopi elders and a similar Inca medicine man and woman would sometimes sit together and meditate, imagining a future world for their future descendants to inherit.
