The fifth chakra is located in the recess of the throat and affects the body’s temperature regulator, the thyroid gland. By regulating the rate of metabolism, the rate at which fuel is burned in the body, it affects body weight and vitamin supplementation. The Sanskrit name for this chakra is vishuda, meaning “pure.” 1500 years ago, Patanjali mentioned siddhis or magical powers in the oldest yoga scriptures. These abilities include bilocate, invisibility, the ability to see into the past, and the ability to discern destiny.
The fifth chakra is the center of our soul, governing super vision, super hearing, subconsciousness and silent communication. A dysfunctional fifth chakra can lead to unwanted spiritual experiences, even in people with borderline personality who are prone to psychosis and neurosis. His fantasies involuntarily seep into his daily life, and he is unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality. When this chakra is out of balance, sleep disorders are common.
Time-wise, the fifth chakra corresponds to ages 28 to 35, when we begin to make our mark in the world. When the fifth chakra is unblocked, we begin to gain recognition in our field of endeavor and gain mastery in our chosen career. Our experience and knowledge determine our place in the world. The fifth chakra gives us the ability to envision possible futures and act on them. You can imagine who you can become and feel the freedom that endless possibilities bring. At this center, true introspection becomes possible because for the first time we can see the totality of our inner world. The fifth chakra allows us to look within and become aware of our own inner processes. We develop vocabulary for our emotional, psychological, and spiritual lives. By the sixth chakra, the breadth and scope of this spiritual vocabulary increases, and we are always able to find inner resources to change the outer world. In the fifth chakra we begin to develop a global perspective. We no longer focus solely on our own group, tribe, or culture. We began to identify with all peoples regardless of race or place of birth. In the first chakra we gain In the third chakra we rebel against our parents and identify with our peer group; in the fourth chakra we identify with our country or culture (pop culture or otherwise). In the fifth chakra we become citizens of the earth.
The fifth chakra allows the feelings of the soul to be expressed. It speaks of our love, kindness and forgiveness. In this center, the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air of the lower chakra combine into pure energy that provides the matrix or framework for our dreams, just like a beehive that provides form for the hive of bees. The throat chakra deploys this matrix around which we create our world.
Awakening the Throat Chakra puts us in sync with life. We’ve all had those mornings when everything seems to be working against us and we wonder if we should stay in bed at all. You walk into the kitchen and you’re out of cereal; you get in your car and you hit all the red lights on your way to work. When the universe becomes unfavorable, when everything is out of sync, we can bring ourselves back into sync with life by clearing our throat chakra and dispelling the clutter and dense energy. The fifth chakra acts like a chimney for all lower centers, releasing the unstable energy in the first chakra that does not enter the earth. A simple way to clear your throat chakra is to tap it three times with your fingertips. I do this several times a day, especially after working with a very “toxic” client.
The negative manifestation of this chakra is intoxication with one’s own knowledge. These people don’t listen to others in conversations. Being correct is more important than understanding. The danger with the fifth chakra is its tendency to turn spiritual insights into dogma. This pathology of the fifth chakra affects the state and the church, such as the emergence of the Inquisition and the religious conflicts that are breaking out around the world today.
To the average person, the fifth chakra acts like a chimney, draining out the energy burned by the lower chakras. Most people use their voices almost exclusively to communicate the emotional needs of their lower chakra. As we become aware of our own psychological and spiritual resources, this chakra becomes increasingly powerful. We discover our true voice.
