The third chakra is located in the solar plexus and is associated with the pancreas. This gland is the energy bank of the body. Glucose is its currency. (The pancreas makes insulin, which carries glucose from the blood into the cells, where it is used as fuel). When the third chakra is functioning properly, the body has sufficient energy for various activities. Since the brain is the body’s largest fuel consumer, a balanced third chakra is essential for clear thinking. It also affects the liver, which is the body’s fuel store. People with third chakra imbalances often have low energy levels. The food they eat is excreted from the body before the nutrients reach the bloodstream. Nutritional problems can occur on a psychological and spiritual level. When the third chakra is dysfunctional, one’s efforts will fail. Even with all the resources to succeed at his disposal, he doesn’t have enough stamina to reach the finish line.
The third chakra is the power center of the luminous energy system. Its power can be used constructively to achieve our desires in the world. When used destructively, it can suppress our original nature or sexual desires, manifesting itself in neurotic symptoms including shame and guilt. This chakra corresponds in time to ages 14 to 21, the years before adulthood.
The feminine power of the first chakra and the raw sexual energy of the second chakra are transformed into premium fuel that the third chakra uses to fulfill its dreams. This chakra replenishes reserves of luminous energy fields. When we awaken the power of this chakra, we experience a fearless spirit and a determination that is unstoppable in the face of adversity. Obstacles in our path will fall apart. The danger is that this leads to an inflated ego. We begin to think of ourselves as the sole masters of our destiny, capable of bending the world to our will. We feel we have the power to make or destroy the world, become dictatorial and manipulative, and strive for personal power and fame at all costs. People who are seduced by the power of the third chakra often seek to control others through intimidation. When this chakra is unblocked, our families and relationships become stable. We will become effective communicators and discover the power of language and words. This center keeps us true to our true nature. Our life goals become clear and aligned with them.
Legend has it that the third chakra of the Inca warriors shone like a golden disk. Legend has it that they cannot be killed. The conquerors would shoot at them with muskets, but the bullets would always miss their target. There are similar legends among the Plains Indians of North America of cavalry shooting at warriors but never hitting them. Inca legend tells us that when one of the glowing warriors slew a worthy adversary, he would drop his own blood on the land as a mark of respect to the others. He understood that one day these people might sit around the fire and exchange stories they had seen or heard. These people believe that if you are angry or fearful on the battlefield, you are already dead.
When I was writing The Dance of the Four Winds I went to Rio de Janeiro with my co-author for a few weeks of uninterrupted work time. I had just completed an expedition to the Amazon and a friend gave me his apartment on the beach in Rio. On our last night, as we were walking back to our apartment along the beach after a celebratory dinner, we were attacked by six people. As we fought the gangsters, time seemed to slow down, and I suddenly understood the teachings of the Glowing Warrior. I stopped fighting and shouted: “Stop!” The shout seemed to penetrate the night, and everyone stopped. I turned to the lead guy and gave him my watch and said he had to change the battery every two years. Then I gave him my wallet. I turned to the other guy and asked him what his shoe size was. He replied 44 yards. I said it was exactly my size and asked him to try on my shoes. The shoes fit perfectly and a smile appeared on his face. My collaborator Eric couldn’t believe his eyes and started struggling again. The three men immediately threw him to the sand. I walked over and explained to Eric that these people were poor and they needed our watches, wallets, shoes and belts. After the exchange was over, the ringleader shook my hand and said. Then every other thief thanked us. I waved and wished them all the best. As we parted ways, I asked the lead guy if he had a car. He said no, then I said he probably didn’t need my driver’s license. He smiled and said of course not, and handed the driver’s license back to me. He said he couldn’t use my credit card either and gave it back to me. He then returned my passport and travel documents to me. Eric was stunned. The thief gave our stuff back to us. Although we were still robbed, we were not violated. We practice nonviolence and are therefore able to change the tone of the entire encounter. We moderate the negative reactions from the second chakra and respond from the third chakra.
The function of the third chakra is to transform vision into reality. This chakra’s name in Sanskrit is manipura, meaning “jeweled palace,” referring to its ability to transform dreams into actual wealth. The shaman understands that your dreams make the world happen. This center is the crucible where our dreams are turned into gold. When you want to improve the world around you, balance your third chakra. The tool in this center is visualization - whether sitting in meditation or being mugged on the beach. The fire element that rules it provides the fuel for dreams to come true. Be careful not to exercise this power for personal gain, but for the common good. The key word for this chakra is service.
