EARTH CHAKRAS Earth (Lower) Chakra
✦
•
The five lower chakras from root to throat are nourished primarily by the earth. Think of a tree with its roots deep into the ground. The nutrients it draws from the earth travel down the trunk to the highest branches. The sunlight absorbed by the leaves is converted into energy, which is then transmitted all the way to the roots of the tree. The four upper chakras are powered primarily by the energy of the Sun, our star. Deva religion emphasizes the development of the upper chakra and neglects the lower chakra. The civilization of the gods perfected technology, reason and logic. The religion of the Earth Goddess emphasizes the development of the lower chakra and ignores the development of the upper chakra. These civilizations remained agricultural cultures with little interest in Western-style advances, but did make advances in astronomy, philosophy, and architecture (the Chinese discovered gunpowder, but only for fireworks; the Europeans used it for warfare). I believe that today we must develop the gifts of both the lower and upper chakras.
Just like the organs in the body, each chakra serves a unique function. The first and second chakras digest emotional energy, grinding it into pieces and extracting nutrients. They metabolize the energy of physical and emotional trauma and transform it into a source of strength and light. Just as the digestive system draws nutrients from food and sends undigested roughage back to the earth, the lower chakras send back to the earth heavy energy that cannot be metabolized into fuel. When the first chakra is disconnected from the earth, the lower centers are unable to expel emotional waste. There is no exit. This waste can turn into toxic sludge that adheres to the walls of the chakra, slowing its rotation. When siltation builds up in our second chakra (the seat of the fight or flight response), we interpret the world as hostile and aggressive. The Sun, Heart, and Throat Chakras (third, fourth, and fifth chakras) are nurtured by the finer energies of love, compassion, and resonance. They are incapable of digesting any emotions. (When we try to digest heavy emotions and feelings with our heart chakra, we run into trouble—we get emotionally burned). The upper (sky) chakra is fed by the subtlest spiritual energy.
During my shamanic training, I underwent a ritual known as the Ribbon of Power, where my mentor wrapped invisible bands around my body. I make sure that my students in the light body therapy school undergo this same ritual as it provides very important spiritual protection to the healer. Five ribbons are installed on different parts of the body. The first ribbon is black, representing the rich black earth, woven around the first chakra. The second ribbon is red, representing water, the blood of the earth, woven around the second and third chakras. The next ribbon is golden, representing fire, woven around the heart. The fourth ribbon is silver, representing wind, and is woven around the throat. The last one is a pure white light ribbon, representing causay, woven on the third eye chakra. These ribbons connect the five elements, directly nourishing the chakras with earth, air, fire, water and causay.

THE FIRST CHAKRA
✦
•
Element: Earth
Color: red
Physical: Body basics; elimination of waste products; rectum, legs, feet, testosterone and estrogen
Instinct: survival, reproduction
Psychological: feeding, sheltering, safety, self-sufficiency
Glands: ovaries and testicles
Seed: Kundalini, Abundance
Negative manifestations: Hoarding, predatory behavior, mindless violence, chronic fatigue, birth trauma, abandonment issues
The first chakra is located at the base of the spine, between the anus and genitals. It is the gateway to womanhood, extending luminous threads along our legs into the biosphere. The first chakra is like a tap root reaching out to the moist, fertile places of Mother Earth to provide us with the necessary nutrients. It is our foundation and the foundation of our luminous energy system. When we disconnect from the earth, we begin to draw our life nutrients from the surface. Thus, we are like a tree with a shallow and extensive root system that cannot survive a storm without falling over. We have lost our stability, our grounding and our security.
When the first chakra is disconnected from the feminine earth, we feel orphaned and without a mother. The male principle dominates and we seek security in material things. Individualism trumps relationships, and selfish drives trump family, social, and global responsibilities. The more disconnected we are from the earth, the more hostile we become to women. We deny our own passion, creativity, and sexuality. Eventually, the Earth itself became a hostile place. I remember a witch doctor in the Amazon telling me: “Do you know why they cut down the rainforest? Because it’s wet, dark, tangled, and feminine.”
The drive of the first chakra is primary and instinctive. We seek refuge. We forage. We strive to survive, even in the harshest of circumstances. We reproduce. These impulses are basic instincts. Just like we can hold our breath but cannot command our body to stop breathing, we cannot override our survival instincts.
The four instinctive drives - fear, eating, fighting, and sex - are reflected in the agenda of the lower two chakras. These are basic procedures needed for physical and emotional survival. Overeating and hoarding money or toys are some of the negative manifestations of the eating instinct. We can never get enough. An imbalanced first chakra manifests as feelings of scarcity and lack. Even those with significant wealth fear losing their possessions. Ironically, poor people tend to be more generous than rich people. With clear first chakra, the scarcity mentality disappears. We will realize that we lack nothing and that we live in abundance. Intellectual understanding alone is not enough. We must let every cell in our body know that we are being cared for and supported by the universe. A collapsed first chakra causes us to build fences to protect our property from our neighbors. An unhealthy second chakra causes us to collect piles of rocks to protect ourselves from our neighbors.
Testosterone and estrogen are hormones associated with the first chakra. Laboratory studies show that testosterone causes two main responses in men: sexual and aggressive. When women take testosterone shots, they complain that they can’t stop thinking about sex. An imbalance in the first chakra can exacerbate the effects of testosterone, causing men to confuse the two instinctive impulses of this hormone. Once this happens, he will start hurting the woman he loves, ultimately destroying the intimacy in the love relationship. This has led to sexual abuse, which is common not only in the United States but also in other parts of the world, especially in countries that are transitioning from rural to urban societies. In South Africa, which is undergoing this transformation, a woman is raped every 26 seconds. When I work with a woman who has been sexually abused early in life, I often find that her first chakra is closed, many times due to a subconscious fear that she will hurt someone else, as she has been hurt by her father or other men in the family.
Estrogen, secreted by the ovaries, is essential for maintaining bone mineral content. After menopause, estrogen production drops dramatically, predisposing women to osteoporosis. In non-industrial societies, the incidence of osteoporosis in women does not appear to be as high as in the United States. Some investigators believe this is because women in the Third World do not live long and therefore never experience significant bone mineral loss. Another reason, I am convinced, is that women in non-industrial societies maintain active connections with the women of the earth throughout their lives. The first chakra induces a strong desire in women for nurturance, relationship, and mating. An imbalance in this chakra can cause a woman to focus too much on security in a relationship, at the expense of autonomy.
First Chakra Ceremonies are held in tribal cultures to celebrate the final passage of boys and girls into adulthood. The ritual encourages the youth to release the restraints placed upon him by his parents. In the ritual, the young man sees the earth as a mother who will never leave him, and the sky as a steadfast, reliable, and enduring father. This ensures that the adolescent will continue to be nurtured by his parents, but now by a force more powerful than his biological parents. Young people can now participate in rituals of worship to heaven and earth, thereby consciously connecting with these cosmic parents. Lacking these rites of puberty, Westerners become spiritual orphans. We struggle through life feeling like we don’t have a mother and a father, and then discover we don’t know how to be a reliable parent.
A person operating from the first chakra is in a primary state of fusion with the world. He is absorbed in his senses and deals only with the material world. He believes that the world owes him something and that the people around him should recognize that he is special. He became self-centered and narcissistic. He cannot experience true love because he cannot put himself in someone else’s shoes; he cannot “walk a mile in someone else’s moccasins.” This center corresponds to the first seven years of life. Trauma experienced in early life, including birth and prenatal trauma, is recorded in this chakra, forming psychological complexes that hinder future development. Like young children, people driven by the first chakra focus on survival and entertainment needs. Once cornered, he becomes violent, lashing out physically or emotionally in response to a perceived threat. First Chakra people will seek temporary sensual gratification at any cost. He often cannot tell where his body ends and the world begins, so others become extensions of himself and no longer matter in his eyes. When I see a person who suffered early childhood abuse, or was abandoned by one or both parents, I immediately look for the involvement of the first chakra. Past life trauma is usually located in the first or second chakra.
The first chakra also has extraordinary positive properties. Its survival instincts ensure the continuation of the species: they drive us to mate and have children, allowing humans to persevere in the harshest conditions. In Sanskrit, the first chakra is called muladhara meaning “ground”. Our spiritual home must be built on a solid foundation. In yoga, this chakra is considered the home of Kundalini energy. Its symbol is a coiled snake, slumbering at the base of the spine. Kundalini is regarded as the main force of the great goddess Shakti, the force that creates all things. To the shaman, this is a primordial serpent swallowing its own tail, depicting a state of unconscious narcissism. For the Amazons, the representative of this power is the sachamama anaconda. In North America, rattlesnakes are the perfect example. When we clear the imprints within the first chakra, Kundalini energy is awakened. The primordial snake is released and its feminine energy moves upward through the chakras. Shamans in America, India, and Tibet have always believed that all living things move, survive, reproduce, and multiply through the power of the primal woman. It is not surprising that in Genesis the serpent brought us the fruit of the tree of knowledge. Its energy lies dormant within each of us. It is the energy of the earth and the heartbeat of Mother Earth.
