Ostara comes from the Latin name of Eostre, the goddess of spring, after whom Easter is named. She is considered Astarte, Ishtar, Hathor, Demeter, Aphrodite. As the goddess of desire, she is the one who goes down to the underworld to find her lover.
According to legend, she once turned a bird into a rabbit while entertaining a group of children. To the delight of the children, the enchanted animal laid Easter eggs. Her story is the basis for the Easter Bunny, the spring egg hunt, and most other traditions associated with this holiday.
Eostre’s story aside, eggs are a wonderful symbol of spring celebrations. The egg white represents the all-encompassing nature of the Goddess, while the golden yolk represents the masculine qualities of the Sun God. The symmetrical shell holds the two together, sealing their fertility and their perfect love for each other.
From a more mundane perspective, all animal life comes from eggs. Fish, poultry, amphibians and insects give birth to them. A mammal becomes pregnant when sperm cells penetrate it. If you want to stretch your imagination a little, you could say that plants sprout from eggs, too. As an embryo and covered by a shell, the seed is egg-shaped in nature. For these reasons, eggs provide the primary fertility symbol for Ostara rituals.
The Goddess transferred her fertility to the Earth and took on the form of a Maiden God. When the male god grows up and matures, he will soon become the lover of the goddess in Beltane.
The Spring Equinox Ostara (March 21) is also called the Celebration of the Sun. The long dark night of winter ends on this day, and day and night begin to divide equally from this day, and the days will become longer and longer, symbolizing the beginning and recovery of positive power.

Equinox activities
Ostara
There is a traditional pastime during the Spring Equinox: going out into the fields and collecting random wildflowers. Before picking flowers to thank them for their sacrifice, it’s a good idea to leave an offering to the plant and/or the earth, such as some milk and honey, a small crystal, or even a coin. Or buy some from a florist, take one or two of your favorite flowers, then take them home and divine their magical meanings using books, your own intuition, pendulums, or other methods. The flowers you choose reveal your inner thoughts and emotions.
At this time, the annual rings are turning, everything is green, and we are surrounded by new life. It’s a very good idea to plan a walk (or cycle) through gardens, parks, woodlands, forests and other green areas. This is not just for exercise, you should not have other tasks. It’s not even just an appreciation of nature. You should fill your steps with celebration, a ritual of nature itself.
Make space for a garden or grow flowers, greenery or vegetables indoors.
You can remove weeds, grass, and trash where you plan your garden, or you can start seeds indoors.
Pick up trash at your favorite park or beach. Help the earth rejuvenate by getting rid of chaos.
Meditate on the image of seeds.
Meditate on the flowers of the season. Flowers are the sexual organs of plants, think about what this means to you.
Meditate on Moon-Hare, the rabbit is a clear symbol of animal fertility, and see what mundane or creative fertility brings to you in your own life.
Honor your chosen goddess or god of spring or earth, or the goddess or god of balance.
Bonfires are lit at dawn on the spring equinox to commemorate the brightest half of the year.
Meditate or perform rituals to balance your life and the life of the Earth
Meditate or perform rituals to bring balance into your life and the life of the Earth.
Make a ritual to signify that the dark half of the year is over.
Use the energy of this time as you would the waxing moon. You can use the energy of this time of year to advance any new projects or goals.
Take a walk in nature and contemplate the magic of nature, our great mother and her generosity.
If you’re not doing spring cleaning in Imbolc, this is an ideal time to freshen up your home for the new season.
