The autumnal equinox on September 23 is an important turning point in the year. This is the moment of perfect balance between day and night, between feminine and masculine, between light and dark.
The autumnal equinox is therefore a time of introspection. Now is the perfect time to review your lifestyle. Just like our ancestors used to prepare for winter, the Autumnal Equinox is an opportunity to rebalance your life and bring you closer to your goals and ideals.
Mabon is the Autumnal Equinox, a time of perfect balance between day and night, between female and male, between light and dark, and we all take a moment to pay homage to the coming darkness. After the Autumnal Equinox, the days will become shorter and the nights longer: darkness will begin to defeat light. The autumnal equinox therefore marks the beginning of the darkest season of the year. As they say, “winter is coming.”
As we store this year’s harvest, we also have waning sunlight to be thankful for. The Druids called this celebration “men Fo’mhair” and celebrated the Green Man, the god of the forest, by offering wine to the trees. It is appropriate to offer cider, wine, herbs and fertilizer at this time. Wiccan celebrates the goddess from mother to crone, and her consort, the male god, in preparation for death and rebirth.
This sabbat has many other names, such as the Second Harvest Festival, the Wine Harvest Festival, the Festival of Avalon, or the Horn of Plenty, and is also considered by many to be the “Wiccan Thanksgiving.” Germanic for “winter’s discovery” from the autumnal equinox to the “winter night” of October 15, this is the Norwegian New Year. On this festive occasion, it is appropriate to wear all your fancy clothes, dine and celebrate in a luxurious setting.
It’s family bonding as we prepare to end the year in Samhain. This festive season is a time to wrap up old business as we prepare for a period of rest, relaxation and reflection.

Autumnal Equinox Activities
Mabon
Pick the best of every vegetable, herb, fruit, nut, etc. you harvest or buy, give it back to Mother Earth with a prayer of thanksgiving, and hang dry ears of corn in your home to give thanks for the harvest season.
Meditate and chant and make a circle of gratitude as you store food for winter
Express gratitude as you face each direction, family, financial and physical health (North), gifts of knowledge (East), achievement in career and hobbies (South), relationships (West), spiritual insights and information (Center).
Decorate the table with colorful autumn leaves in a basket. Display the fruits of the harvest—corn, gourds, nuts, grapes, apples—ideally in a cornucopia. Or decorate with wildflowers, acorns, nuts, berries, cocoons, anything that represents harvest to you.
Like its sister the Spring Equinox, halfway through the annual cycle, the Autumnal Equinox is a time for ritual feasting. Plan a meal that uses seasonal and symbolic fruits and vegetables. You can serve bread, pumpkin, corn, apples, cider, and wine. Make some homemade wine or lovingly collect and dry herbs, plants, seeds and seed pods.
Use dried bittersweet herbs to create a grapevine wreath for protection. Use gold and yellow ribbons to bring in the energy of the sun and decorate with dried yarrow or cinnamon sticks to create a hazelnut (hazelnut) amulet strung on red thread.
Make a witch’s broom: Tie dry corn husks or herbs (broom, cedar, fennel, lavender, mint, rosemary) to a sturdy, relatively straight branch of your choice.
Make the Gift of a Magic Apple Doll Harvest can be used to create tools and badges to remind us of their bounty all year round.
Look for colorful leaves. Gather fallen leaves to create centerpieces or bouquets for your home. Save the leaves to burn in your Christmas fire.
Visit an apple orchard and, if possible, pick your own apples. Hang apples on a tree near your home. Watch the birds and other critters that will love your gift.
This is also the time to replace your old broom with a new one. Since broom corn is now ripe, making broomsticks is traditional and magical this time of year.
Start the holiday season with a harvest from a vineyard or orchard, check out farmland in your area to see if there are orchards or pumpkin patches where customers can harvest their own produce.
Traditionally, the Sabbat festival begins at sunset on the eve of the festival. Use the daylight hours on the eve of this holiday to prepare baskets for the next day’s harvest. Baking pumpkin pie is a great way to get into the holiday spirit.
