Beltane May Day, also known as May Eve, May Day and Walpurgis Night, takes place in early May and celebrates the splendor of spring and the exuberance of life. The goddess appears as May Queen and Flora. The male god appears in the form of May King and Jack in the Green. Dancing around the maypole represented their unity, with the pole itself being the male god and the ribbon surrounding it being the goddess. The colors are the colors of the rainbow. May Day is a festival of flowers, fertility, sensuality and joy.
Beltaine means Bel (Irish), Beli (Welsh), Belanos (Pan-Celtic), Fire of Belinos, all of which are names of the sun god. The male god is usually regarded as the horned god at this time and begins his half-year reign of light with mature power. The original meaning of Beltane is “the flame of the God of Light”, which is the moment when the divine positive power shows its glory.
May Day is a festival of flowers, abundance, sensuality and joy. May Day and its counterpart Samhain divide the year into two main seasons, winter (the dark part) and summer (the light part). Just as Samhain commemorates death, Beltane commemorates life. This is the time when the sun is completely freed from the shackles of winter and can once again rule summer and life. Like Samhain, Beltane is a time of “no time” where the veil between the two worlds is thinnest. There is no time when two worlds blend and unite, magic is everywhere!
The beginning of summer heralds an important moment, because winter is a difficult journey, exhaustion and depression set in, and personally, one is exhausted to the core of one’s soul. Food reserves were low during past winters. The monotony and colorlessness of late winter perfectly represents the dullness and exhaustion that still pervades today on so many levels. We need May Day as the earth needs the sun, because our souls cry out for the renewal of summer joy.
May Day marks the passage into the growing season, when the earth immediately awakens from its gentle slumber, it is a time when the joy of earth and self is fully awakened. It marks the moment when the bounty of the Earth will be possessed again. May is the season when flowers bloom and trees are lush. Life returns again from the barren scene of winter, to the hope of a good harvest, which is not far away, and to the carefree happiness that only summer can bring.
Flowers, wreaths and garlands are typical decorations for this holiday, as well as ribbons and streamers. Flowers are an important symbol of May Day, they symbolize the triumph of summer over winter, the bloom of sensuality in nature and the generosity it will bring. Just as May Day marks the wedding of the goddess and the god, it also marks the reawakening of the earth’s bounty.
It is the union between the Great Mother and her young consort that brings new life to the earth. On a spiritual level, the unity of the Divine Masculine and the Divine Feminine brings about a third consciousness. On the physical plane, it is the union of the Earth and the Sun that brings about the harvest during the growing season.

Maypole Spell
Beltane
The Maypole is a traditional symbol of abundance and good luck. Usually, various colorful ribbons are pulled down from the top of the Maypole. Each girl holds a ribbon in her hand and dances happily around the Maypole, letting the ribbons wrap around the entire Maypole from top to bottom in a fixed color sequence. It is said that as long as there are no gaps in the ribbons on the Maypole, good luck will be ensured for the whole village that year! Therefore, through the Maypole tradition, we can make small versions of the Maypole and place them on our altars or in our homes to bring us good luck and blessings.

May Day Activities
Beltane
If you live near water, make a wreath or bouquet of spring flowers and cast it into a stream, lake, or river to bless the water gods.
Prepare a May basket, fill it with flowers and kindness, and give it to someone who needs care, such as an absentee person or an elderly friend.
Make a wish for good luck as you hop onto a bonfire or candle flame—but be sure to tie up your maxi first!
Make a May Bowl—wine-soaked woodruff or other fragrant flowers—and drink it with your loved ones.
Rise up at dawn and wash yourself in the morning dew: the woman who washes her face with it will be beautiful; he who washes his hands will be skilled in the use of knots and nets.
Dancing around the maypole.
Gather the first wild vegetables of the season.
Go to the woods and fields to pick flowers, go to a carnival. Go on a picnic.
Wash your face with dew at sunrise in Beltane to be beautiful in the coming year. Traditionally it is the dew of hawthorn trees, but dew of grasses and flowers will also work.
Make daisy chains, flower garlands, and garland tiaras to wear and place on the maypole. Braid flowers in your hair. Make and wear a green leaf mask to represent the returning Green Man.
Mark the borders of your magic circle with oatmeal (a traditional Beltane cereal).
Make a wish as you dance around a bonfire or candlelight for good luck—but be sure to tie up your maxi first!
Many people like to celebrate by decorating their homes and themselves with garlands of flowers or stringing greenery around their homes and workplaces.
Sending flowers to loved ones, planting a new garden, clearing out cupboards and spring cleaning are all traditional Beltane expressions.
Weaving straw, making things from wicker, making baskets and fabrics are traditional arts during this year’s annual cycle.
A fire is lit in the fireplace at sunset to invoke the sun god. Lasts until sunset on May 1st. If you don’t have a fireplace or it’s too hot to light a fire, light a large white or yellow 7-day candle. As you light the fire or wick, chant: * “Sun God, fire in the sky, light the earth and warm the nights. Warm our spirits, hearts and hands. Send your light across this land.” *
Use hanger wire as a base to create a door wreath with fresh greenery and flowers. Simply shape the wire into a circle and then use floral wire to connect small bouquets of flowers and greenery. Finished with a pretty bow. Use any leftover plant material to decorate the house.
A breakfast supper is offered to evoke the fertility of the sun god. Pancakes, eggs, milk, cheese, bacon, sausage and honey are all good choices. Prepare an extra plate for the Sun God and place it on the east side after dinner is over.
