Why do crystals need to be purified?

When you start working with crystals, the first thing you should learn is how to cleanse them. I am not talking about physical purification, but spiritual purification.
Crystals are sensitive tools that both project and absorb energy. If you’ve never cleansed your crystals, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. To some people, cleansing crystals can seem intimidating or even complicated, but once you start using them, it won’t be.
Crystals collect various energies from our thoughts, feelings, people and places.
Sometimes these energies are inconsistent with the crystal’s, they may even be negative, or simply clog the crystal, weakening its properties.
For example if you use crystals to heal your chakras, it can take away energy that you don’t want to keep or pass on to others. If you have purchased or obtained new crystals, you should purify them before using them. Also if someone handles your crystals, it’s a good idea to purify them as well.
When is it necessary to cleanse crystals?

- After wearing or carrying them all day
- If someone touches or handles your crystal

How to Purify Crystals

There are many methods available for crystal clearing, and you can use any of them to cleanse your crystals and bring them back into balance. Some of the methods you may come across online and in books can actually damage your crystals (I know because I learned this the hard way). I don’t recommend you use water, salt or sun. So I will only share with you those crystals that I have used and know to be completely safe for you. Some of these methods are well known, but some you may not have heard of before.
Whatever method you choose, remember it’s all about your intention. As you do this, focus on purifying your crystals.
- Smoke method
This popular Native American cleansing method uses bundles of dried white sage and can be purchased at most occult stores or websites. You will need a plate to catch any ashes.
Open a window for ventilation, light a white sage stick, and blow out any flames. You can now pass the crystal through the smoke a few times to purify it.
You can also burn parts of Peruvian sacred wood in a similar manner. Burning the Peruvian sacred wood is a tradition from Peru. Please ensure that Peruvian sacred wood is sustainably and ethically sourced, and collected only from naturally fallen branches.
Or use other forms of purifying natural incense, such as sticks, cones, powders, or diffusers. Sandalwood, camphor, copal, lemongrass, sage, frankincense and myrrh can be used. Or any blend of purifying incense. Burn it in a suitable heat-resistant holder and pass the crystal through the smoke. Remember to open the windows.
- Moonlight method
On a full moon night, place the crystal on a windowsill facing the moon. You can also leave them outside if it’s safe to do so and dry. If desired, cover them with a glass jar or bowl for extra protection. Moonlight will purify the crystal overnight.
Just remember to get them back first thing in the morning so they don’t get too much direct sunlight or they will fade over time.
- Reiki or other energy healing methods
If you are a Reiki healer or use any other energy healing method, you can use it anytime or anywhere to cleanse your crystals. Simply hold your crystals and channel healing energy through them.
- Visualization white light method
This is a completely freeing way to channel white light through visualization to cleanse your crystals.
- Sound method
Played with singing bowls, cymbals, or other instruments, they produce a tone that is both soothing and cleansing.
Don’t put crystals inside the singing bowl (you may damage them), place them outside, surrounding the singing bowl. You can also hold the bowl in one hand, sit on a cushion, and make the sound over the crystal. Lightly tap one side with the stick, then slowly rub the rim or outer edge of the singing bowl in a clockwise direction a few times.

Less well known, but one of the easiest to use. This is a specialty tool, but you can find these online and they are made from copper tubing or copper rods. Based on the proportions of the Great Pyramid as well as powerful sacred geometry. Use a compass when arranging so that all four of your sides are always facing the four cardinal directions. Just leave your crystal in the pyramid for an hour or more.

Why not use water?
The water flow method or soil burial method, the sunlight method and the sea salt method are all methods that will destroy certain minerals and are generally not recommended.
Will purging remove some of the good energy?
Purifying crystals does not remove any good energy from your crystals. Everything you remove is energy that doesn’t belong there, or is energy that is blocking your crystal and preventing it from working at its optimal level. Cleansing a crystal does not remove any programming you have placed in the crystal unless this is your will. This is called “deprogramming” and is not the same thing as “cleansing.”
These are just some of the methods you can use. Over time, you may develop your own way. After cleansing the crystal will feel rejuvenated and renewed and reach its full potential.
