Cleansing is one of the frequently heard themes in occult classes and is generally done on a regular basis, at least once a week, but most shamans, myself included, do not do this. Since I learned Reiki, using Reiki to purify has become very easy~
What is purification?
Cleansing
I often find that people have misunderstandings about cleansing, perhaps misunderstanding the purpose of cleansing, or thinking that banishing or grounding etc. is cleansing, but in reality, cleansing is something completely different.
Cleansing is the removal of unwanted energy from a person, place or object. Purification is usually the mildest form of removal, while expulsion is a more intense tactic. Not by forceful expulsion, but by simply removing the ties that hold the energy in place and allowing the energy to transform into something neutral.
This process is useful for ensuring that there are no energies in you, your living space, or things near you that could harm or interfere with you. It is useful for creating a blank slate in your environment or preparing tools for spell work as well as keeping your energy stable and healthy.
Many shamans like to cleanse their homes regularly, as well as cleanse new items that are brought into the home. Purification has countless uses and is one of the essential skills every witch should master.
How does purification work?
Cleansing
- Choose what needs to be purified
The first step in cleansing is deciding what needs to be cleansed:
Does the energy in your home feel a little stagnant?
Have you ever noticed a strange energy hanging from your second-hand rolling pin?
Did you get a new ritual tool or crystal?
Are you feeling a little tired and sluggish?
It might be time to purge! Just figure out what it is and go from there.
- Choose a purification method
This step is critical to successful purification. There are many methods for purification; however, not every method is suitable for every application. For example, using water to clean a fragile crystal can cause damage to the crystal. Using smoke in the room where your pet lives can be very dangerous for your pet. Each method has a time and place when it is safest and most effective, and you must choose your method wisely.
Commonly used purification methods
Cleansing
- Smoke purification
Smoke decontamination is the process of purifying a room, an object or yourself with smoke. Usually sage is preferred, but agarwood, cedarwood, rosemary, and many other herbs can also be used for this purpose.
The process of smoke purification is quite simple. Light your herb bag, extinguishing any flames and letting it burn. Diffuse the smoke over objects, bodies, or around the room to allow the smoke to break up stuck or unwanted energies and transform them into neutral, free-flowing energy.
Another important consideration when using this method is your pet’s health. As long as dogs and cats don’t get too close to smoke and the room is well ventilated (windows open!), they’ll probably be fine, but small pets should never be exposed to any form of smoke. Rodents, birds, and reptiles have very small lungs, and even small amounts of smoke can affect their health. If you have this type of pet, it’s best to use another form of purification!
2.Water
There are many ways to purify water. Bathing, washing objects, or letting things soak are all great ways to remove unwanted energy.
Another option is to fill a spray bottle with energy water and use it to spray the room. It is important to note that no matter what you put in the water, it will not harm the object or you if you come into contact with the water. Some herbs, stones and crystals can be very toxic when placed in water.
Water is one of the most powerful forms of personal cleansing, and immersing yourself in a good cleansing bath can remove not only energetic impurities, but also spiritual, mantra and emotional issues, and more.
- Salt or earth
Burying items in salt or soil for 12-24 hours can remove unwanted energy. If you bury something in the soil, I recommend placing it in a container (a pot or bowl) so items don’t accidentally get lost.
- Moonlight and Sunlight
Depending on your intentions, moonlight and sunlight can be used to purify and recharge items. Often in these cases it is necessary to take into account the phases of the moon or the seasons, as these things can affect the energy produced by the item.
- Sound
Bells, drums, singing bowls, etc. can clear away unwanted energy residue. This method is particularly good for large spaces and can be combined with dance for added effect. Hang a bell by your front door so your home stays clean and your energy gets a boost every time you leave or come home.
- Crystal
Some crystals can be used for purification. Smoky quartz are quite effective, they do not absorb energy, so they do not require purification themselves.
Start purifying
Cleansing
Once you’ve chosen what you want to purify and the appropriate method, it’s time to start purifying! The important thing to remember is to have plenty of patience no matter what it is.
It is important to remember that no matter what you are purifying, or what method you use to purify it, intention is what drives magic.
In order for most of the methods described above to work, you must hold the intention that the object will return to a neutral energy state. This can be done in a variety of ways, either visualizing the energy changing, imagining how the changed energy would feel, or simply holding the thought or idea in your mind. As long as you have the intention to purify an object or space, magic will take care of the rest.
After purification
Cleansing
Often after a cleanse, many people have a feeling of “what now?” Purification is fairly simple, and it can leave many wizards feeling like they’re only doing half the job. If you find yourself feeling this way, there are many ways to follow up on the cleanse and give it a neat ending.
1.Guard
After cleansing a place, object, or even yourself, you can help prevent unwanted energy from coming back. Often, if you can identify the source of unwanted energy, you can nip the problem in the bud and prevent it from recurring.
2.Expulsion
Occasionally, the power of the cleanse isn’t enough to get the job done. If you find that you’ve completed your cleanse but still feel like something isn’t right, you may need to turn to something more firm. Expulsion can often get rid of energy that cleansing cannot, whether it’s from old or very stubborn energy. Banishing is also an important skill every witch needs to learn.
- Fill the space with new energy
After purification, an energy void is often left behind. This neutral energy can easily absorb the wrong energy that you don’t want. The best way to prevent this is to charge whatever you just purified with a new energy of your choice. For example, Reiki is very high-frequency energy and is easy to operate~
purification cycle
Cleansing
Purging is a tool that is a fairly gentle way to clear out negative energy, so my recommendation is to purge your home every week or two, as well as purge after any big mood swings or periods of stress.
If you are an empath, are sensitive to other people, or are prone to mood swings and emotional turmoil, you can purge multiple times a week or even daily if you find that it helps.
Purifying new items that are brought into the home can be helpful in preventing old energy buildups from being dragged into the home. This is especially helpful for secondhand and vintage items! These items often have a long history. These items often have a long history, and it is unknown what kind of energy residue they may carry with them.
It’s a good idea to purify ritual tools before ritual or use, but if you’ve already programmed or cast a spell on an item, you may want to delay purification. That said, if you want to lift a spell or reprogram a tool, cleansing is a great first step. Depending on the strength or complexity of the spell, it may require more than a simple cleanse to remove properly.
It’s also a good idea to thoroughly decontaminate your home and belongings after a breakup. Pay special attention to mattresses, shared items, and anything you mentally connect to. It may be necessary to purge these things multiple times because as you go through the post-breakup phase, you may add more negative emotions to it.

Purifying your personal energy is a fairly personal subject. Some people greatly enjoy cleansing their energy regularly, while others may find that they rarely need to do so.
Experiment and find your personal preference.
There are many simple ways to cleanse your energy, daily or otherwise, and simply incorporating water purification into your shower or bath will do the trick. Even something as simple as washing your hands can serve as a proper cleansing routine.
Standing with your feet on grass or in natural water is also effective.
Carrying a purifying stone with you, such as smoky quartz, is also effective.
You can even let the breeze carry away any unwanted energy throughout the day.
