Imbolc literally means “in the belly.” That’s because it’s that time of year when the belly of the earth seems to begin to burst with life, and it’s also when the sheep begin to give birth. It is also known as Oimealg by the Druids. It is the festival of lactating sheep. It is derived from the Gaelic word “oimelc” meaning “ewe’s milk”.
This is the time for the blessing of seeds and the consecration of farm tools. It marks the center point of darkness for half a year and is also the Feast of the Virgin, which, from this day to March 21, is her season of preparation for growth and renewal. Brighid’s snake emerged from Mother Earth’s womb to test the weather (the origin of Groundhog Day), and in many places the first crocuses began to bloom from the frozen earth. It was originally one of the highest holy days of the Celts, with celebrations centered around the Celtic goddess Brigid.
Imbolc is traditionally the festival of Brigid. Brigit is the Celtic triple goddess of poetry, healing and fire. Her name is also known as Brid, Brigit, Bridget and Bride. She is the Mother Goddess of Ireland (goddess of all people) and the entire country worships her. She is a protector, warrior, guardian of children, and goddess of fire and the sun. Her symbol includes a heart, as Valentine’s Day is celebrated in just a few weeks. The bride is believed to be the one who awakens the earth, so as the goddess of fire and the sun, candles or bonfires are always lit for her. Her color is white, which represents the purity of snow and milk, and since she is responsible for the fertility of the earth, all women who are getting married are named after her (the bride) and wear white in honor of her in the hope that she will bless the marriage. Women in labor in the Scottish Isles would ask for her help in delivering their babies safely, and when the baby was safe, they would thank her and consider themselves blessed by Brigid herself. Many different healing methods are attributed to Brigid, and every region in the Celtic lands has an ancient story of her help.
This festival is also known as Latha Fhèill Brìghde, Lá Fhéile Bríde, Gwyl Ffraed. On this day, virgins are honored as brides. Straw Brideo’gas are made from oat or wheat straw and placed in a basket with a white flower bed. The young girls then carry the Brideo’gas from house to house, with each family giving a gift to the image. Brighid’s crosses were made from wheat straw and were exchanged as symbols of protection and prosperity for the coming year.
Placing a broom at the front door symbolizes sweeping away the old and ushering in the new. Candles are lit and placed in every room of the house to commemorate the rebirth of the sun. Many places also make candles on this day and burn them all night long, so this day is also called the “Festival of Lights.”

Candlemas events
Imbolc
This is traditionally a time of cleansing – cleaning your house! If you have any Christmas greenery left over, burn it now
Make your own Brigid’s Crosses and hang them, especially in the kitchen, to bless your food
Leave food - cakes, bread and butter and milk - outside the door: Brigid and her cows passing through the neighborhood tonight will thank you for your offerings
Leave a ribbon on your doorstep for Brighid’s blessing: it can be used for healing purposes
Meditate on what health and strength you would like to see grow this year: for yourself, your family, your community, the earth, and ask for Brighid’s blessings in your prayers.
Burn candles, burn sandalwood
Place three ears of corn on the door as a symbol of the Triple Goddess until removed during the Ostara festival
Burn rosemary or verbena to cleanse the area where you are reading cards or divination, then say:
With the power of this smoke, I purify the negative effects
Cleaned up the place and the lady and her baby
Beginning at sunset on Candlemas Eve (February 1), place a lighted candle in each window of the house and let them continue burning until sunrise
Make candles and then consecrate all the candles you will use throughout the year
Hike and look for signs of spring
Decorate a plow and place it on your doorstep
Weave a “Bridget Cross” of straw or wheat and hang it around the house for protection
Purify and reconsecrate your ritual tools and purify your altars
Start Ordering Spring Garden Seeds
Use the seeds in your inventory to make a seed blessing
This is an appropriate time to bless your home, ritually cleanse it and begin your “spring” cleaning
Do a period of spiritual cleansing
Burn Christmas greenery to bid farewell to winter
Make a purifying bath to purify your body, a meditation to purify the mind
As a time for cleaning and purifying, this is a good time to make or buy a new broom if you don’t already have one. Symbolically clean your home from top to bottom, getting rid of the old to make room for the new
