Samhain means “late summer” and the Celts recognized only two seasons, winter and summer, with summer running from Beltane to Samhain and winter running from Samhain to Beltane. It is also the third and final harvest. The dark winter of the year begins with this festival.
Other names for this Sabbat are Third Harvest, Samana, Day of the Dead, Old Halloween, Festival of Shadows, and Samhuinn. Also known as All Hallows’ Eve and Martinmas, Samhain is now commonly considered the wizarding New Year. It is usually celebrated on October 31st, but some traditions prefer November 1st.
The secular laws of time and space are temporarily suspended and the veil between worlds becomes thinner, when communication with ancestors and deceased loved ones is easy as they pass through this world on their way to the other. It is a time to learn dark secrets and honor the Dark Goddess and Dark Goddess, symbolized by the Crone Goddess and her aged consort.
Originally in Celtic countries, Day of the Dead was celebrated by leaving food on altars and doorsteps for the “wandering spirits of the dead.” Many people still follow this tradition today. Light a single candle in the window to help guide the spirits of ancestors and loved ones back home. Extra chairs were set up around the table and fireplace for unseen guests. Apples are buried on roadsides and paths for souls who are lost or have no descendants to support them, and it is not recommended to go out after dark.
The Celts believed that Samhain, the god of death, would return to the world with his spirit body on the night of October 31st, looking for a replacement. So they lit torches and burned animals as offerings to the god of death. They would also dress themselves up with costumes made of animal heads or furs and make strange sounds so that the God of Death would not recognize them and avoid disaster. That’s where today’s Halloween costume party comes from. After that night, the spirit returned to another world and everything returned to peace.
At Samhain we close one cycle and prepare to enter a new one. So this is a perfect time to mourn your losses and celebrate your gains. If you lose a loved one during the year, letting them go on Samhain can ensure their safe passage to the other world. If you haven’t, you probably still have a lot to release: lost relationships, old habits, emotions, and thought patterns that you no longer need.
Releasing these things on Samhain will help you later in life, making room for new growth. Remember nature hates emptiness and what you release will soon be replaced by positivity and joy.

Take a square piece of paper
Write in black ink exactly what needs to be changed/released
For example, I need to quit smoking
turn the paper over
Use a green pen to write down the changes you need to grow on the other side of the paper.
Visualize them as they have already happened
For example, my debt has been reduced by quitting smoking, etc.
When your list is complete
Place a bay leaf or a fallen leaf in the center of the paper
Then fold the black writing side and the leaf in half
Fold it in half twice more to form a small package
Place a blank envelope and seal it
Whether it’s a campfire or the flame of your candle
You must all safely burn this letter on Samhain night to seal the pact.
As the paper begins to burn, look at it and say:
I said the negative patterns disappeared
As you burn
Keep the negative patterns at bay
Open the door to great change
Change my life
Change my destiny
Expand my horizons, my life, my soul
Positive change is my goal now

Samhain Festival Activities

Making a jack-o-lantern has been a pagan custom for thousands of years. They are designed to scare away evil spirits that follow deceased loved ones and block their return to the land of the living.
Drink warm apple cider with cinnamon in memory of the deceased.
Since this is also the Wizarding New Year, it’s the day to make New Year’s resolutions, write them down on paper, and then burn them. The smoke will bring them before the gods.
Bury apples in your yard and resurrect the souls that pass by.
Make a spirit candle to burn. Anoint a white candle with patchouli oil. Say: With the light of this candle, I welcome you on this Samhain night. “Put a candle in your jack-o’-lantern. If you don’t have one, place it on a table near the entrance or in the center of the dining room table.
Trick or treat.
Leave a place open at your table for the silent souls of your deceased loved ones and light their way to the fireplace with carved pumpkins and candlelight.
Make masks to wear and decorate your doorway. In the past, masks were used to confuse or scare away unwanted spirits. Today make them bright and shiny with fabrics, feathers, beads and trinkets in honor of the goddess and the many faces of God.
Carve a grinning jack-o-lantern and place it on your front porch or walkway to welcome friendly spirits and protect your home from mischievous ones, just like our ancestors did long ago.
Make a Witch’s Rope, Samhain A witch’s rope should express your wishes or hopes for the new year. Get three strands of ribbon or string in three different colors, each about three feet long. Choose a color that symbolizes hope for the new year. Fold one end down about 5 inches and tie into a knot, creating a loop so the rope can be hung. Braid three strands together, recite your wishes and hopes, and tie at least three knots in the tail. You can add anything you want to the rope - feathers, stones, herbs, small toys, tokens of memory for loved ones, etc.
Samhain is a great time to hunt for magic wands. Look for branches or fallen wood, and when you find your wand, be sure to thank the tree and leave a gift. Once you’ve cleaned it up by thinning it and sanding it if necessary, let your kids decorate it.
