Four Ways to Make Your Magical Ritual More Effective - A Beginner’s Guide to Witches
Follow joya, magical every day

When a novice witch first begins a ritual, she feels excited and confused. Trying to take it all in, I found myself a little overwhelmed, but still very excited.
Everyone has different issues in their learning journey, some may take a few months, some a year or more, but eventually we all hit a point in our learning where we feel like we know a lot, but we don’t feel like we’ve fully mastered using what we’ve learned.
At this point in the learning process, confidence wanes and leads to a lot of questioning: Is your ritual effective? How could you know? Is there something missing?
This crisis of confidence can be frustrating because a shift in mindset can impact your ritual, leading to poor results, a poorer feel for witchcraft, or even failure.
Speaking of frustrating, don’t worry if you’re stuck in this confidence trap. Today I will share 4 ways to help novice witches improve the success rate of magical rituals, so that you can get out of the slump and regain energy.
1. Don’t worry about the results
Constantly worrying about whether your spell is working and wondering if you messed up something won’t do you any good! Magic is the application of energy through intention. When you cast a spell, you are making movements and words that help the energy move in the direction of your intention. If you spend all your time worrying after casting a spell, these energies may interfere with your intentions.
Suppose you make a job spell to help you find a job. You may spend 30-45 minutes focusing your energy on the mantra. Now this energy is combined with your intention and will, which makes it more potent than false, everyday thoughts, but if you spent four days worrying about this spell non-stop, which thought do you think would get more of your energy?
The solution is simple: stop worrying about the results! Learn to trust yourself and your own magic. Even if you’re not yet at the point where you can trust your magic to take you where you want to go, remind yourself. Worrying is counterproductive! Any time you find yourself worrying about the results of a spell, tell yourself not to worry, the magic is working.
2. Don’t get too hung up on details
Have you ever stumbled upon a spell or realized at the last second that you were out of almond oil and had to substitute olive oil? These small details may seem overwhelming in the moment, but in the grand scheme of things, they are often insignificant.
Magic is channeling energy through intention. Every movement, every tool, and every step involved in a spell is just a way to solidify your intention and channel your energy.
Olive oil may not match your intentions as well as almond oil, but it can get the job done just as well if you pour enough attention and energy into it.
Stumbling over a few words while reciting a spell, or forgetting what you were supposed to say and having to check it while reciting it, isn’t actually a world-ending mistake. A few minor mishaps didn’t actually have much of an impact on my ceremony. Even if you feel frustrated and disappointed that you are struggling to recite the mantra, the ritual can work well.
As long as you stay focused on your intention, you could be saying a bunch of meaningless syllables and it would still work.
So give yourself a breather when it comes to small details. You can always add more skill to your ritual, but you shouldn’t let “imperfect casting” turn into “no casting” because you feel like you can’t get it.
3. Give yourself enough time to enter “Witch Mode”
Everyone’s situation is different, and some people need some time to adjust. It takes time to switch from errand mode to work mode, from work mode to vacation mode, from daily mode to witch mode. This transition period isn’t always convenient for busy modern lives, but trying to ignore them has consequences! When trying to jump straight from one activity to the next, you deny yourself the necessary space to truly reach your most proficient state in an activity.
Skills used in hobbies may not necessarily be suitable for use at work. Although the modern world expects humans to work like efficient computers, we don’t work that way. The brain needs time to task-switch between your social skills, work-related skills, and spiritual skills. Give yourself enough time to complete the complete transformation before the ceremony!
If you are impatient or have difficulty with this transition, I suggest you create a transformation ritual. Set yourself a set of activities to do before each ritual. This can be simple or complex, from 5 minutes of meditation and self-cleansing to a full bath ritual with candles, music and work. No matter what it is, make sure it is the same every time you do the ritual. Your consciousness will create a connection between this ritualized transformation and your magic, and in the long run you will be able to complete this transformation faster than usual. This method does take some time to implement, so in the meantime, remember to give yourself plenty of space and time to get into a groove!
4. Become “dramatic”
Ritual work is a highly personal endeavor, and for many people, standardized methods can feel incredibly monotonous. One way to escape this feeling of mundane starts with using psychology. This is basically a dramatic “faking” process. You dress up, put on magical music, and decorate the space to look magical. You get into character, become the witch you want to be, and then you work your magic. It’s all about setting the stage and getting into the right mindset. You want to create an environment where you feel as magical as possible.
At first, it may feel very dramatic and fake. Over time, you’ll focus on what really makes a difference (the right music, the right environment, etc.) and eventually you’ll get a personal feel for how to make yourself incredible in this way. For many people, this is a key factor in eliminating nagging doubts that can derail your magical efforts.
When you get into character and scene in this way, you really lose yourself in the process, and usually you get much better results from your rituals! You definitely don’t have to be stuck in “traditional” ideas of what witchcraft is and do things that feel witchy to you.
Choose things that make you feel in a general sense; choose music that evokes emotion, clothing that makes you feel great, etc. It doesn’t matter what dramatic elements you use, as long as they get you into the right mood and state of mind.
*You may not be able to ensure that every ritual you cast is successful, but you can give your rituals the best chance by making these four adjustments to your ritual casting and mindset. *
