How to Make a Wand and 5 Ways to Use It - A Beginner’s Guide to Witches
Pay attention to Qiao Ya’s magic every day

In witchcraft, a wand is a long, pointed tool used to focus and direct energy. But if you haven’t studied the process of magic, you probably first heard about wands through stories or movies. Maybe you saw a magician using a wand at a show, or saw wands for sale along with princess costumes. Because of this, I used to think wands were the stuff of myths and fairy tales. However once I started practicing witchcraft, I realized that wands have many practical uses in real world witchcraft!
I am a huge advocate of making your own magic tools so that you can put your own energy and power into the tools. This creates a strong connection between you and your magical tool, which will make your spells even more powerful. As far as crafts go, making a wand is a lot of fun and may put you in touch with your inner child again. If you’re looking for a fun way to spend an evening, making wands is a great activity to do by yourself or with your magical friends.

01
Make a magic wand
Wooden wands are the most common, most durable, and easiest to decorate, but feel free to use any other material you think will suit your wand. If you are using wood, I recommend taking a walk in nature to find a good wand stick. You want a cane that feels dry, strong, and in good condition. Make sure there aren’t any soft spots on the wood.
The most important thing is to trust your instincts when choosing a cane. When you pick it up, notice how it feels in your hands. Does it fit your grip? Does it have an attractive energy? What drew you to that piece of wood? Remember to thank the trees in that space for providing you with wood.
Once you choose your wand, you can choose to decorate it with or without bark. If you like the look of wood without bark, carefully remove the bark with a knife. Use appropriate knife safety when doing this. If you’re not comfortable with a knife, you can skip this step and keep the bark intact. Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots on the wood, especially the ends.

Cherry wood: clarity of mind and decision-making
Maple Tree: Love, Abundance, Money and Health
Pine Tree: Protection, Purification, Healing and Mental Clarity
Cedar: Healing, spirituality and prosperity
Willow tree: love, tranquility, harmony
Apple: Fertility, Healing and Abundance
Elderberry: Protection, Prosperity and Healing

The magical meaning of metal
Before you begin, think about what you want to use your wand for. You can make an all-purpose wand, or you can get a more specific wand, such as one dedicated to money spells, love spells, abundance spells, or increasing spiritual awareness.
Do some research on the different magical powers of materials. Gather the materials to support the magic you plan to do with your wand. Consider decorating your wand with any meaningful personal trinket or family heirloom. These items will add power to your wand.
Here are some metals to consider:
Copper: health, abundance, money, love
Brass: communication, resilience, protection, abundance and money
Silver: Psychic abilities, protection and moon magic
Steel: protection, healing, good sleep
Gold: Beauty, Love, Abundance, Success and Money
Tin: Divination, luck and success
Zinc: protection, fertility, love, prosperity and banishing magic
Your local hardware store is a great place to find affordable wand supplies. Copper, brass or steel wire can be purchased in a variety of thicknesses. Try to choose thinner wires as they will bend around the wood more easily. Nuts, bolts and fittings can be “screwed” onto the wand’s shaft.

04
The magical meaning of crystals
Many witches like to add crystals to the end of their wands. Wrap the base of the stone with wire and attach it to the end of the wand. You may want to use some strong glue to secure the stone to the wood. Some crystal points have holes drilled into them, making them easy to attach to the ends of wood with wire.
Here are some common crystal magical meanings:
White Crystal: Strength, Protection, and General Magic
Rose Quartz: Self-love, friendship and romantic love
Citrine: love, success, abundance, money, career breakthroughs
Amethyst: Intuition, spiritual connection and healing
Agate: protection, courage and strength
Jade: Emotional balance, unconditional love, prosperity, luck, elimination of negative emotions
Smoky Quartz: Purifies, protects and eliminates negative emotions
Hematite: Optimism, determination, down-to-earth energy, willpower

Other magical decorations
Incorporate color magic by painting or dyeing your wand. Paint it all one color, or create images and designs in multiple colors.
Carve symbols, letters or numbers into the wood to add meaning, or draw patterns with a permanent marker.
Decorate your wand with colorful rope or ribbon. To use knot magic, tie the knot to the rope before wrapping it around the wand. Add decorative beads to the string.
Add jewelry such as rings, necklace chains, and earrings to the wand. Consider using a strong adhesive to secure these materials to the wood.
Add feathers, dried flowers, or some other natural element to your wand.

How to Identify the Power of a Wand
If you’ve already made your wand for a specific purpose, you can start using it right away. If you don’t know what magic to do with a wand, you can use a little magic to find out.
The easiest way is to ask what energy your wand carries. To do this, place the wand between your palms and close your eyes. Ask the wand (out loud or in your head): “What is your energy level right now?” Sit quietly and wait for a response. This reaction usually appears in your mind in the form of a thought. Be open to any responses you receive.
You can also place the wand in your lap and close your eyes. As you meditate, allow yourself to receive the energy of the wand. Do this for five to ten minutes. Take note of the energy you get from the wand.
A third way to identify wand energies is to use tarot or oracle cards. Shuffle the cards as usual and ask the question: “What power does my wand have?”. You can ask follow-up questions such as: “What kind of spell would work best with this wand?” or “What are the advantages/disadvantages of this wand.”
Keep in mind that your wand’s power may change over time. If you feel a shift in energy then you can use as many of these techniques as you can

How to use a magic wand
There are many different ways to use your wand, these are just a few ways to get started. Once you’re familiar with these methods, intuitively explore other ways to use this amazing tool in your practice.
- Activate the Crystal Grid
Create crystal grids of any shape. Hold the wand in your right hand and point the tip toward the crystal furthest from the center. Begin meditating on the intention of the Crystal Grid. Slowly move the tip of the wand over the crystal as if you were “connecting the dots,” starting from the outside and moving toward the center. Keep your attention focused on the intention of the crystal grid. Once your wand tip reaches the center of the grid, speak your intention out loud and raise the wand tip up toward the sky. When you make this motion with your wand, you are sending your intention out into the universe.
- Focus on and direct intention
Point your wand at your altar, candle, inscription, or any magical item you use to enhance your spell. Imagine a beam of light (your own energy) passing through your hand, coming out of the tip of your wand, and into the object. The tip of the wand directs and focuses energy into your magical object to enhance your magical intentions.
- “Write out” intentions
Use your wand to “write” your intention in the air letter by letter, then use the tip of your stick to “write” your intention in the air sentence by sentence. Point your wand upward to complete your spell by sending your intention out into the universe.
- Purify or recharge
Set your intention before starting the spell. For example, you can choose to cleanse your body of negative energy, recharge yourself with loving energy, or cover yourself with protective energy.
First, point the tip of the wand toward your feet and make circular motions in the air above your body. Starting from the ground, move your body upward until your wand is pointing above your head. As you make this motion with the wand, imagine the colored light coming from the wand seeping into your body. As you perform this mantra, observe any sensations in your body.
- Forge a magic circle
Holding your wand in your right hand, imagine a beam of blue light (or whatever color you like) shooting from your hand, through your wand, and into the center of your circle. In your mind’s eye, see the light getting bigger and bigger until it reaches the size you want. Step into the heart of the space. When you are ready to close your circle, imagine the light floating on the earth disappearing like melting snowflakes.
